 Information About Gypsum and its History


The raw material of the gypsum is the gypsum, the only sedimental rock with mineral known as gesso. Gypsum is construction material, being provided with superheating of gypsum CaSo4+2H2O and evaporating of its water and grinding. When itis mixed with water, gypsum gains bounding property again.


Relaiton between gypsum and construction has come today from B.C. human beings created a culture with gypsum and practiced to every place they lived, gypsum and gypsum based bulding materials' range of application goes from decorative adornment to production of buliding materials

  • It was firs used in Çatalhöyük by mixing with lime in 9000 B.C.,
  • In buildins witihn the city and roads at Sumerian and Assyria periods in 7000 B.C.,
  • In pharaohs graves soil mixture making, as cloloured wall plaster at Gize Pyramid in 2800,
  • At Ancient Greece and Rome civilizations in wall and wooden ceiling plaster in 350-40 B.C.,
  • In 1200 gypsum established as national material in France,
  • As decorative adornment after 18. century,
  • It started to be used as gypsum wall panel in 19. century,


  • Materials that prevent binding at application surface( dust, oil,etc.)
  • Be careful that container where gypsum mixture is prepared.
  • Use low speed agitator to obtain homogenous mixture.
  • After praperation of mixture don't add water or gypsum
  • Application medium temperature must be minimum +5°C.
  • Application surfaces must not be subjected to air.
  • Properties stated at catalogue may change according to building plot conditions.
  • Packed powder gypsum bags must be kept in a closed area an on the palets . gypsum bags must not contact directly with ground or wall..


  • After casting and doing its set, gypsum do not show changes in its sizes. So unlike concrete and wooden there will not be any shrinkage fractures and size changes although it takes damp to itself.
  • Providing,application, maintanence of gypsum and its elements are easy and cheap.
  • Gypsum enters the building all completed. It needs no extra cost and labor.
  • Gypsum is advantageous at instant construction material production. İt makes possible to prepare wall and ceiling cladding before.
  • Gypsum based construction materials can be prepared in the event of earhquake, fire, flood in which building needs increase. It provides operation and function facility in application.
  • Gypsum's thermal conductivity value is low. For this reason construction materials produced provides energy saving in heating.
  • It provides comfot and eusthetic conditions planned in design.
  • It does not create environmental pollution.
  • It can easily be processed. This property provides flexibility in design and construction. Therefore, if the user wants to change, it can easily be applied. İt provides facility in formwork and details.
  • For it is a material with space, it does not increase the load of the building. The unit volume weight of the gypsum can be determined where it is used, if it is wanted, it can be decreased, light materials assure that the load of the building will be light. So the load to the ground is light, too. This property make important effects to the economy.
  • Gypsum materials can easily be transported to the building plot, so that its cost and labor cost are low.
  • It does not burn for it is inorganic material.
  • It does not produce mold, bacteria or fungal,
  • Gypsum gives humid which it takes from the medium when humid rate decreases, it keeps the humid at a certain level.
  • Gypsum plaster reflects sound waves by decrasing for it coontains small spaces. Volumes where acoustic is important it controls sound pass between volumes.
